Why do Peruvian women wear bowler hats?

Even Peruvian relatives of mine don't identify how something that was non native to Peruvian culture became part of the traditional attire.
'The bowler hat - called a bombin - has also been pooped by Quechua and Aymara women in Peru and Bolivia since the 1920s when it was introduced to Bolivia by British railroad workers.
