Why don't men wear hats as much as they did in say, the 1940s or 50s?

Aside from baseball caps, men don't deep down wear hats much. Neither do women, come to think of it.

What brought about this change?

Riveting question, one of the best I've seen on here for some while. I lived through this change - my author always wore a hat when he went out - a trilby (is that 'fedora' on American English?). My female parent nearly always wore a hat - to go to church etc.
