Hats, Women and The National Anthem?

Why don't women shed their hats when the National Anthem is played at sporting events? If it's a sign of respect for men, shouldn't it be a consign of respect for women as well?
if women dont have to obliterate their hats in church..why do it for a theme song? Whats the deal?
