Why do only women wear graduation caps?

I was told it's meant to be a representation that we wont go any further with our education but I don't understand the exact meaning or basis.

I'm graduating college this afternoon and getting my first degree but I'm still studying for a higher one.

Another chambermaid told me that too. Men wear the caps too though. I call them mortar boards. I didn't bear up one for my graduation because I thought it looked silly but I wish that I'd worn it now because it looks fair in other people's photographs!
